Lancashire Heritage at Heart of Prescot Arts & Music Festival
Lancashire Heritage at Heart of Prescot Arts & Music Festival
The town of Prescot’s historic Lancashire identity will be at the heart of its annual arts and music festival this year.
The 10-day event opens on Friday 16 June with a concert by Leyland Band, the number-one ranked brass band in the county. A traditional hot pot supper, courtesy of Cottom’s, will accompany an evening of nostalgic melodies representing the spirit of Lancashire.
For visitors to the 17th-century Prescot Parish Church, local artists the Jones Boys have curated an exhibition of vintage Prescot posters and handbills, many of which come from British Insulated Cables—an industrial presence in the town for over a century.
History buffs can dig up more facts about the town’s history with a visit to the Heritage Hub during the week, and the following Saturday (24th) Knowsley archivists give a talk in which they delve into treasures, artifacts and curiosities from Prescot’s rich past.
Although the town has been formally within the county of Merseyside and the borough of Knowsley since 1974, its place within the ceremonial county of Lancashire remains a point of pride for locals.
“For centuries Prescot was the commercial and cultural centre of Lancashire, and we’re still Lancastrians at heart,” said festival founder and artistic director Dr Robert Howard.
“We’re proud to reflect that strong heritage in this annual celebration of arts, music, culture and entertainment.”
The Prescot Festival runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 25 June 2017. The full programme—including Phoenix Concert Orchestra, the Chilled Lemons Jazz Quintet, organist Ian Tracey, the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Girl Choristers & more—is online at www.prescotfestival.co.uk.

Prescot Hockey Men – Champions Again
Prescot Hockey Club first team return to North West Division One as Champions!!
Prescot needed to match Neston’s result to be crowned Division 2 Champions and did it in emphatic style beating Macclesfield 4 2 with goals from Mortimer, Jobes (2) and Doyle.
In a very competitive league Prescot had dominated the early part of the season but lost key players to injury which gave the initiative to Neston. However, Prescot completed the double over their rivals to return to the top of the league with five games to go. Scoring a remarkable 119 goals in 22 games (a League and Club record) Prescot have absolutely outplayed teams from start to finish.
What makes these back to back promotions even more remarkable is that it has been done with basically the same squad of players plus youngsters Callum Heaps and Nathan Johnson who have come through the ranks at the Club.
With hockey seen as a minority sport for local schools the Prescot club has had to rely on their own coaching abilities and the motivation of the squad players to improve their game. The results speak for themselves and having won Division 3 last season with 54 points and scoring 109 goals the step up in quality in Division 2 was always going to be a challenge. However, with a superb session of indoor hockey and a Summer League victory everyone was kept fit and the momentum continued into this year.
Prescot Hockey Club run several mens and ladies teams and have a thriving junior hockey section for under 16s. Anyone wanting to come down and play hockey will be more than welcome. Sutton Lesiure centre Wednesdays at 7pm (Juniors) and 8pm (Seniors). More details on Facebook, twitter and our website.

Army Band Lined up for Prescot Festival Finale
One of the nation’s top military bands will appear at this year’s Prescot Festival.
Organisers of the arts and music festival, now in its 13th year, have secured the Band of the Yorkshire Regiment as its musical guest for its Proms-style finale.
Audience members are encouraged to wave flags and sing along to a selection of well-known patriotic tunes at the concert on Sunday 25 June. The climactic event regularly attracts several hundred music lovers to the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church in Prescot.

The festival always welcomes new volunteers to help make sure things run smoothly behind the scenes, and sponsorship opportunities are available to individuals and businesses eager to invest in local arts and culture.
“Community music-making is at the heart of the Prescot Festival,” said Founder and Artistic Director Dr Robert Howard, “so we encourage local people to get involved in what’s going on, whether it’s picking up a pen to write a story, greeting guests on the door as a steward, or belting out a song at the Festival Finale.”
