Prescot Hockey Men – Champions Again
Prescot Hockey Club first team return to North West Division One as Champions!!
Prescot needed to match Neston’s result to be crowned Division 2 Champions and did it in emphatic style beating Macclesfield 4 2 with goals from Mortimer, Jobes (2) and Doyle.
In a very competitive league Prescot had dominated the early part of the season but lost key players to injury which gave the initiative to Neston. However, Prescot completed the double over their rivals to return to the top of the league with five games to go. Scoring a remarkable 119 goals in 22 games (a League and Club record) Prescot have absolutely outplayed teams from start to finish.
What makes these back to back promotions even more remarkable is that it has been done with basically the same squad of players plus youngsters Callum Heaps and Nathan Johnson who have come through the ranks at the Club.
With hockey seen as a minority sport for local schools the Prescot club has had to rely on their own coaching abilities and the motivation of the squad players to improve their game. The results speak for themselves and having won Division 3 last season with 54 points and scoring 109 goals the step up in quality in Division 2 was always going to be a challenge. However, with a superb session of indoor hockey and a Summer League victory everyone was kept fit and the momentum continued into this year.
Prescot Hockey Club run several mens and ladies teams and have a thriving junior hockey section for under 16s. Anyone wanting to come down and play hockey will be more than welcome. Sutton Lesiure centre Wednesdays at 7pm (Juniors) and 8pm (Seniors). More details on Facebook, twitter and our website.

Army Band Lined up for Prescot Festival Finale
One of the nation’s top military bands will appear at this year’s Prescot Festival.
Organisers of the arts and music festival, now in its 13th year, have secured the Band of the Yorkshire Regiment as its musical guest for its Proms-style finale.
Audience members are encouraged to wave flags and sing along to a selection of well-known patriotic tunes at the concert on Sunday 25 June. The climactic event regularly attracts several hundred music lovers to the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church in Prescot.
There are other ways to participate in the 10-day festival, too. Sopranos, altos, tenors and basses are invited to ‘Come & Sing’ with the Prescot Festival Chorus on Saturday 17 June. James Luxton of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral will conduct the massed choir in performances of Rutter’s ‘Magnificat’ and Parry’s ‘I Was Glad.’
Budding authors can enter the 2017 Prescot Festival Short Story Competition by writing up to 1,000 words of fiction inspired by the theme ‘Clocking Off.’
The festival always welcomes new volunteers to help make sure things run smoothly behind the scenes, and sponsorship opportunities are available to individuals and businesses eager to invest in local arts and culture.
“Community music-making is at the heart of the Prescot Festival,” said Founder and Artistic Director Dr Robert Howard, “so we encourage local people to get involved in what’s going on, whether it’s picking up a pen to write a story, greeting guests on the door as a steward, or belting out a song at the Festival Finale.”
The 13th Annual Prescot Festival of Music & the Arts runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 25 June 2017 in the historic Lancashire town of Prescot, Merseyside. Highlights of this year’s programme include Leyland Band, Phoenix Concert Orchestra and the Chilled Lemons Jazz Quintet with vocalist Chris James.

Prescot Hockey Update
Double Promotion guaranteed for Ladies seconds and Mens first team.
Manchester 1 Prescot Men 4
Prescot Hockey Club Men guaranteed their return to the Division One in the sixteen division North West Hockey League for the first time since 2003. Goals from Jobes, Doyle, Cal Heaps and veteran defender Heyes made sure of the points and the promotion.
It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the Prescot first team having finished mid table in Division 3 North just two seasons ago. However, captain Chris Lomax, coach Rob Clarkin and Club Captain Mike Johnson put a plan together based around speed, skill and scoring goals from all over the pitch.
What makes the back to back promotions even more remarkable is it has been done with basically the same squad of players plus youngsters Callum Heaps and Nathan Johnson who have come through the ranks at the Club. With hockey seen as a minority sport for local schools the club has had to rely on their own coaching abilities and the motivation of the squad players to improve their game. The results speak for themselves and having won Division 3 last season with 54 points and scoring 109 goals the step up in quality in Division 2 was always going to be a challenge. However, with a superb session of indoor hockey and a Summer League everyone was kept fit and the momentum continued into this year.
The results this season have been even better than last year even against sides who on paper have much better strength in depth. Prescot have dominated Division 2 North West scoring eight goals or more on six occasions and they head back to the top table next season with ambitions to make it three promotions on the spin.
With one game to play Prescot need to match Neston’s result next week as they both have 52 points from 21 games. However, Prescot have beaten Neston twice and have a vastly superior goal difference.
Prescot Ladies Twos 2 Salford University 1
The ladies seconds secured another promotion, their third in four seasons as they defeated Salford university in their final league game of the season. An excellent team spirit and superb hockey has established the ladies twos as a force to be reckoned with.
Prescot Ladies 2 Crewe 2
The ladies picked up an excellent away point in Crewe.

Prescot Hockey Update
An excellent weekend of hockey:
Prescot Men 9 Crewe 1
A much changed Crewe came to Prescot needing points in their relegation scrap, however it was Prescot who blew them away with all nine goals from open play. The route started with Si Boulton reverse striking beyond the Crewe keeper before Doyle and Mortimer added to the score. Mortimer then added a fourth and Boulton a fifth just before half time. In the second half Crewe had their best spell and forced a string of penalty corners from which they eventually scored a consolation goal. This sparked Prescot into life as they smashed four goals in six minutes from Johnson, Boulton and Mortimer with two more. Prescot could have easily hit double figures however nine one is a great result and puts pressure on leaders Neston.
Rhyl 0 Prescot Men 13 (thirteen)
Prescot travelled to Rhyl for a rearranged game knowing a win would all but secure a top two finish. Rhyl capitulated and Prescot scored at will to give themselves a huge goal difference advantage of plus 79 and destroy their previous record goals total with 111 now scored in only 18 games. Goals from Warburton, Doyle (3), Hayes, Mortimer, Jobes (2), Boulton (2) and Nathan Johnson (3) blew the Welsh outfit away and put them in serious relegation trouble.
Next week Prescot travel to City of Manchester whilst Neston play Triton so a win for Prescot should secure promotion and a win for third placed Triton would gift Prescot the title with a game to spare. Having won Division Three last season the Prescot mens first team have dominated Division Two North West and should be back in the top division for the first time since 2003 for next season.
The Club wishes to pass on a massive thank you to the coaches, volunteers, umpires and squad of players who have turned the performances around over the last two seasons.
Prescot Hockey Club will be running Free junior hockey on Wednesdays, 7pm at Sutton and we welcome adults and senior players of all abilities to join our growing and ambitious hockey club Wednesdays 8pm at Sutton Leisure Centre. More information on Facebook and Twitter.
Prescot Ladies Twos 2 Manchester University 2
The ladies seconds gained a valuable point in Manchester to move four points clear with two games to play. They play third placed Salford next week so could secure their third promotion in four years with a win or a draw.
Lancashire Heritage at Heart of Prescot Arts & Music Festival
Lancashire Heritage at Heart of Prescot Arts & Music Festival
The town of Prescot’s historic Lancashire identity will be at the heart of its annual arts and music festival this year.
The 10-day event opens on Friday 16 June with a concert by Leyland Band, the number-one ranked brass band in the county. A traditional hot pot supper, courtesy of Cottom’s, will accompany an evening of nostalgic melodies representing the spirit of Lancashire.
For visitors to the 17th-century Prescot Parish Church, local artists the Jones Boys have curated an exhibition of vintage Prescot posters and handbills, many of which come from British Insulated Cables—an industrial presence in the town for over a century.
History buffs can dig up more facts about the town’s history with a visit to the Heritage Hub during the week, and the following Saturday (24th) Knowsley archivists give a talk in which they delve into treasures, artifacts and curiosities from Prescot’s rich past.
Although the town has been formally within the county of Merseyside and the borough of Knowsley since 1974, its place within the ceremonial county of Lancashire remains a point of pride for locals.
“For centuries Prescot was the commercial and cultural centre of Lancashire, and we’re still Lancastrians at heart,” said festival founder and artistic director Dr Robert Howard.
“We’re proud to reflect that strong heritage in this annual celebration of arts, music, culture and entertainment.”
The Prescot Festival runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 25 June 2017. The full programme—including Phoenix Concert Orchestra, the Chilled Lemons Jazz Quintet, organist Ian Tracey, the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Girl Choristers & more—is online at www.prescotfestival.co.uk.
